Why has my tax code changed?

Your tax code is designed to deduct the correct amount of tax on salary so that nothing is owed at the end of the year.

Typically a tax code changes when HMRC finds out about income or tax relief that impacts the correct amount of tax for it to collect. Examples include:

  • New Employment Benefits are declared through P11d

  • New income is declared through Self Assessment

  • A second employment income is declared through PAYE

  • Marriage Allowance is claimed

To check your tax code is correct you can logon to your Personal Tax Account or ask HMRC by phone or web chat.
