What is an Ex-Gratia Payment?

Ex Gratia Payments are payments paid voluntarily usually to an individual. They are often referred to as a goodwill gesture as the organisation making the payment has no obligation to make the payment.

Often but not always Ex Gratia Payments are not taxed.
