What should I do if I can’t pay my tax?

If you are unable to pay tax our advice is to:

  • Keep your tax returns up to date. Late submissions will lead to penalties and further amounts to pay.

  • Communicate with HMRC. HMRC will only discuss late payments once a tax return is submitted but often late payment penalties can be avoided with communication.

  • Set up a payment plan. Often HMRC will accept a payment plan and usually this can be arranged online: https://www.gov.uk/difficulties-paying-hmrc/pay-in-instalments
